SPF: What does it really mean?

Hey guys!

So, it's finally starting to feel like summer is around the corner!  I thought it would be appropriate to do a post about SPF facts and just sunscreen in general.

As you may or may not know SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is the measurement in minutes of how long it would take you to burn with sunscreen on as opposed to without.

So basically if you have a sunscreen with SPF 30 you should be reapplying every 30 minutes.

Sun Burns are caused by UBV rays and that's what SPF is protecting you from, however please keep in mind while basking in the sun that SPF does not protect from UVA rays which also can cause skin cancer.

Also, buying SPF 60 does not mean it will work twice as well as SPF 30 at blocking UVB rays it just means you have to reapply less often. On the *bright side (see what I did there?), a higher SPF rating DOES block a slightly larger percentage of UBV rays but definitely not double.

Here are the approximate percentages of UBV rays being blocked by common SPF rated lotions:
SPF 15 - 94%
SPF 30- 97%
SPF 45- 98%
There are currently no products that exist that will block 100% of UBV rays.

**ALL SPF rated lotions or products should be reapplied after a maximum of 2 hours regardless of the rating.

Why is all this important on a beauty blog?

one word,

WRINKLES.

As I'm sure you all know, sun damage is one of the leading causes of premature skin aging.

I myself am guilty of not applying enough, if any, sunscreen on a hot day on my way to a patio for a beer.
In my defence, before learning all this stuff  I thought my foundation containing SPF 5 was good enough.

Turns out, it is definitely better than a foundation with nothing in it, but because we don't slab on our foundation (especially in the summer) its just not enough.

So ladies protect those beautiful faces and invest in some sunscreen!
