Navigating Sephora for beginners

So recently I had a friend tell me that she attempted to go to Sephora and browse for her first time but found it really overwhelming and wasn't sure where to start.

This reminded me of my first time in Sephora because I had a very similar experience!
I decided to go alone as soon as it opened in my home town. I remember feeling so lost and ended up leaving empty handed and exhausted! There were so many brands I hadn't heard of and I didn't even know where to start!

The staff ("Cast members") of course are always super nice and always willing to help but when you don't know what you're looking for and just want to look around its hard for them to make suggestions too. Plus, in my case I was scared of looking like a total makeup n00b (which I was at the time).

I'm hoping with the tips in this post newbies everywhere will feel a little more comfortable jumping into the makeup world.

The Store setup

Once you figure out the store setup things seem less chaotic. Sephora is actually set up a lot like a drugstore. They have 5 specific areas: skincare, fragrances, haircare, nail polish and my favourite, makeup! Within these areas the products are sorted by brand. That's where your research comes into play. If you're looking for mascara? What brand? You can then go to that brands section and see  all of that brands products that Sephora carries!

The Research

This step is a must before you decided to make the trip into Sephora for your first time.
Here's a couple questions to ask yourself:

  • What type of product am I looking for? Mascara? Foundation? Eyeshadow palettes?
  • What brand has the best reviews? Urban decay? Tart? NARS?
  • What is my price point?

At the bottom of this post I will list a couple of my favourite beginner products to keep an eye out for.

The Samples

Samples are a great way to try new things without being afraid you will hate it! I know it can be hard to deviate from your tried and true formulas but the "Cast members" generally know their stuff!
By letting them know what you like or dislike about a product they can suggest you try a sample of something else! Its also a fantastic way to become familiar with different brands! I've always gotten enough of a sample to know if I am interested in buying it on my next trip in!

The Rewards

Sephora has a great free rewards program, the members of this program are called Beauty Insiders. Like most reward programs you can get a card or sign up on line with your email and every dollar you spend earns you 1 point. You can redeem your points for 100 point products, 250 point products and 500 point products.

All beauty insiders get a free birthday gift every year from Sephora!

Depending on how much you spend at Sephora in a year determines your Beauty Insider status.
There are 3 different levels of card holders:

  • Beauty Insider  - Everyone starts here!
  • VIB(Very Important Beauty Insider) - Obtained when you spend $350 per calendar year
  • VIB Rouge - Obtained when you spend more than $1000 per calendar year.
Each level unlocks different advantages such as invites to store events, free makeovers and early access to new products!

My Beginner Product Recommendations

Eyeshadow palette: Urban Decay - Naked Basics

Hands down the best beginner palette! All the shades are basic and matte. This palette is what I used everyday when I first started wearing eyeshadow! This palette has it all! An all over lid shade, a crease shade, an utter corner shade, an inner corner shade and a brow high light shade!($34)

Mascara: Urban Decay - Perversion

There are a lot of amazing mascara's to try but currently this one is my favourite! It's not very lengthening but it gives my eyelashes amazing volume which I prefer! ($26)

Tools: Beauty Blender

I honestly don't know how else I would blend out my under eye concealer! There are plenty of drugstore dupes for this as well!($26)

Thanks for reading! Hope this Helps!
